Gau Prasad Jugjali Magar hat bad luck last Summer Update: Gau Prasad and his new dog Wicky
Gau Prasad belongs to the first batch of new junior SAR Dog handler's students who were recruited in October 2009 right after the Tihar Festival. After passing SLC some 7 years ago he was working as a seasonal trekking guide for almost 6 years with SISNE ROVER Trekking Agency in Pokhara, following the footsteps of his father who is a senior mountain trekking guide.
Due to the political upheaval that followed the 10 years long Maoist insurgency that let to the decline of visiting trekkers from abroad Gau Prasad lost his motivation to continue with this job. Many young guides could not make their financial ends meet anymore in the trekking business around Annapurna.
Gau Prasad will finish his basic dog handlers training in December 2011. After that he has to follow a long series of specialized trainings such as avalanche victims search & rescue, rock climbing instructors certificate, driving license for 4 wheel jeep and truck, (including servicing and maintenance of SAR vehicles) earthquake first response and mitigation courses, basic first aid and much more His training partner, the female German short hair pointer Maggie was a gift from Mrs. Lynn Martin, who is a certified dog trainer affiliated with the Dog Obedience Academy in Lebanon - Oregon /USA Lynn Martin introduced the clicker training methode to our dog handlers. http://www.dogobedienceacademy.com/
Unfortunately he lost Maggie in last summers rain season. During an early morning walk around the training base the unlucky dog was bitten by a Himalayan Pit Viper and died within 24 hours. Such bad luck events are actually very rare in Nepal yet very sad nevertheless. After breeding and handling SAR Dogs in Nepal for more than 2 decades this was the very first and hopefully the last encounter between a rare deadly dangerous snake and one of our valuable SAR Dogs.
A female German short hair pointer with the name Wicky for Gau Prasad arrives from Germany on February 4, 2011 together with our German SAR Dog trainer and examiner Mrs. Daniela Neika from the Charitable Society Rettungshunde fuer Nepal e.V. This will be Daniela's fourth visit and training session.
